DNA Testing

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a chemical in our bodies. There are 4 types which make our genetic blueprint.

Molecules of DNA travel through each generation as we are conceived. Some comes from each parent, giving us our individuality.

Strands of DNA join into what looks like a twisted ladder. This is known as a “helix”.

Each genetic DNA code or blueprint is different but can be very similar to others in our families. Unlike a fingerprint, parts of our DNA can be matched to those we are related to because some of these molecules are shared by each generation of the same family.

A DNA test looks at similarities in molecules to find the identities of certain individuals.

It is impossible that anyone not related to an individual family to have some of these shared (or repeated) molecules.

Because it can now be identified so easily, DNA testing has become a tool of the forensic scientist. It can help them identify individuals from the DNA they have left behind in crime scenes, by collecting a sample of blood, saliva or other, appropriate fluid or tissue from personal items and then comparing with a sample from the suspect or from samples collected in a database.

The UK has a large National DNA database, which increases each year causing some concern in the civil rights arena.

The DNA test
A small swab is rolled firmly on the inside of both cheeks for about a minute. This action is firm but should not cause discomfort.

Taking care not to let the tip of the swab touch anything to avoid contamination it should then be place in a sample selection envelope or test tube and sealed with details of the sample written clearly on the outside.
