The Izmit test is part of a project which concerns the results of a remote sensing technique, which will provide information that will be useful in the detection of damage that disasters such as earthquakes, can bring to many less developed or underdeveloped areas.
The earthquake in 1999 that occurred around Izmit, a city in north-western turkey, was a 7.6 magnitude earthquake and although it only lasted 36 seconds it killed between 17 and 40 thousand people and left half a million people homeless.
The earthquake was a case study for the use of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) which can be used in satellites to help detect where the damage is located both in buildings and surrounding areas so that communication can be given between the relevant aid agencies and governments.
