Dyslexia Pre-test
It has been estimated that 1 out of 10 people are Dyslexic. For many it can be seen as an occasional mix up of numbers or dates, a word that you know but find it difficult to spell right every time, but for some the effects of dyslexia can be confidence shaking and disabling.
However with the right strategies and techniques children and adults suffering with dyslexia can get over their difficulties.
if you can answer ‘yes’ to any four of the questions below then you or your child may need further testing for dyslexia.
1. Are there any family members who experienced difficulty learning to read or spell when they were at school?
2. Is your child experiencing reluctance to go to school or feelings of failure at school?
3. Does your child have difficulties with spelling?
4. Does your child miss out words when reading?
5. Does your child have difficulty reading aloud?
6. Does your child sometimes skip lines when reading?
7. Does your child experience difficulty copying from the board?
8. Does your child get confused about following instructions, for example when playing a game?
9. Is your child unable to count backwards from 100 down to 0?
10. Is anyone in your family left-handed?

If you as an adult and can answer to 5 or more of these Questions you may need to have a full dyslexia test.
1 When writing checks/cheques, do you frequently find yourself making mistakes?
2 When using the telephone, do you tend to get the numbers mixed up when you dial?
3 Is your spelling poor?
4 Do you mix up dates and times and miss appointments?
5 Do you find forms difficult and confusing?
6 Do you find it difficult to take messages on the telephone and pass them on correctly?
7 Do you mix up bus numbers like 95 and 59?
8 Do you find it difficult to say the months of the year forward in a fluent manner?
9 Did you find it hard to learn your multiplication tables at school?
10 Do you take longer than you should to read a page of a book?
11 Do you find difficulty in telling left from right?
12 When you have to say a long word, do you sometimes find it difficult to get all the sounds in the right order?

Workplace Drug Testing

The misuse of Drugs Act (1971) makes it an offence for anyone to knowingly produce, supply or use controlled substances on their premises, unless those drugs have been prescribed by a doctor

Drugs misuse is a concern for everyone but especially if it is happening in the workplace. Not only is it hazardous to the user and in certain areas of work, those around them, for the employer it can cost them time and money, in absences and loss of productivity.

For these reasons some employers have taken it upon themselves to begin random drugs testing of their employees.

Under the Data Protection Act any monitoring of employees must be open and visible and part of the Business’s overall ‘Risk Assessment’ policy.

An employee does not have to take a test but if they refuse, after the employer has found grounds to do the test (after consultation with health and safety), it is possible that the employee will face disciplinary action.

There are 4 main tests at the moment:

1. Urine drug testing.
This can be done on-site and can be tested for a range of drugs within minutes. Different drugs are detectable in urine for different lengths of time,
The speed of this test is advantageous for an employer but the sample should be tested in a laboratory if a positive result will affect the status of an employee. Testing in the laboratory could take 2 – 5 days for a confirmation.

2. Hair testing.
Hair grows at about 1cm a month, so the advantage of testing hair for drug use can give a history of misuse for as long as the hair has been growing.
Hair testing takes longer than urine testing as it has to be processed in a laboratory before being tested. This can take up to 10 days.

3. Oral/Saliva Testing
This is not an exact science as there is no standardised processing test.
Unlike Hair and urine where drug use can be detected over days and months oral fluid and saliva can only be detected within hours.
A large amount of drugs needs to have been in the body to come through into the mouth in the quantities for testing

4 Drug testing wipes/swabs
These are useful by the fact that they don’t intrude on the person. They are used to wipe down a surface where drugs may have been used (door handle, tables, toilets) and results are immediate as the wipes change colour.

DNA Testing

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a chemical in our bodies. There are 4 types which make our genetic blueprint.

Molecules of DNA travel through each generation as we are conceived. Some comes from each parent, giving us our individuality.

Strands of DNA join into what looks like a twisted ladder. This is known as a “helix”.

Each genetic DNA code or blueprint is different but can be very similar to others in our families. Unlike a fingerprint, parts of our DNA can be matched to those we are related to because some of these molecules are shared by each generation of the same family.

A DNA test looks at similarities in molecules to find the identities of certain individuals.

It is impossible that anyone not related to an individual family to have some of these shared (or repeated) molecules.

Because it can now be identified so easily, DNA testing has become a tool of the forensic scientist. It can help them identify individuals from the DNA they have left behind in crime scenes, by collecting a sample of blood, saliva or other, appropriate fluid or tissue from personal items and then comparing with a sample from the suspect or from samples collected in a database.

The UK has a large National DNA database, which increases each year causing some concern in the civil rights arena.

The DNA test
A small swab is rolled firmly on the inside of both cheeks for about a minute. This action is firm but should not cause discomfort.

Taking care not to let the tip of the swab touch anything to avoid contamination it should then be place in a sample selection envelope or test tube and sealed with details of the sample written clearly on the outside.

The earthquake in 1999 that occurred around Izmit, a city in north-western turkey, was a 7.6 magnitude earthquake and although it only lasted 36 seconds it killed between 17 and 40 thousand people and left half a million people homeless.

The earthquake was a case study for the use of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) which can be used in satellites to help detect where the damage is located both in buildings and surrounding areas so that communication can be given between the relevant aid agencies and governments.

One way to keep motivation in your running is to see yourself improve.
For beginner runners (and everyone else too for that matter) a fitness test is a daunting prospect. Running till the point of exhaustion is no fun and can be dangerous.

Here is a low stress fitness test which will give you a level of fitness indicator.

You will need;
A stopwatch and a heart rate monitor (preferably one which sounds an audible alarm if you go over a certain limit but that’s not essential).

Pick a course that will take around 30 minutes to run around at a slow pace. The course should be as flat as possible with no interruptions from traffic or roads to cross.

A country park or canal towpath is ideal.

The object of the test is to measure how long it takes you to complete the course within your aerobic capacity (not getting out of breath).

To find a VERY ROUGH top aerobic level, take your age from 180. This is your top level heart rate.

Jog & warm up for about 10 minutes or so. Set the heart rate monitor to your upper level and start running.

You will probably be surprised at how slowly you will need to run to keep your heart rate below your test level.

If your alarm does go off, don’t stop to walk, slow down and try to keep to a running motion going.

When you finish, depending on your heart rate monitor, you will have two numbers.

Firstly, the total time, you took to do the course and secondly, the time spent over the heart rate limit.

The first is the most important. (Don’t worry too much about the second.

Repeat the test every 3 weeks or so and hopefully, your time taken will decrease as your fitness improves.

If you are super fit, do the same course again, this time going at race pace. You will have had 2 tests in 1 session.

Thanks to roadrunning.net for this test

Many lives could be saved each year if everyone had basic life support knowledge & awareness.

The following is just an example but the actions to take afterwards may help in an emergency situation,

You are walking in the basement corridor of a medical centre. Ahead of you a middle-aged man suddenly slumps against the wall and slides to the floor. No one is available to help. What should you do next?

If your answer to this question is “I don’t know” then read on…

1 Make sure you, and the casualty are safe, along with any other bystanders.

2 Check the casualty for a response by gently shaking their shoulder and asking loudly ”Are you all right?”

3 If the casualty responds then – providing there is no further immediate danger
Leave them in the position you found them
Talk with them to find out what is wrong, and then get further help if possible
Keep checking on them.

4 If the casualty doesn’t respond – Shout for help
Turn the casualty so that they are on their back, then placing your hand on their forehead gently tilt their head back, your finger and thumb may be needed to hold their nose if mouth to mouth is needed.

5 If breathing is normal
It’s not always easy to tell whether breathing is normal or not so look, listen, and feel.

Look for chest movement
Listen at the casualty’s mouth for breath sounds
Feel for air on your cheek
If you have any doubt whether breathing is normal, act as if it is not normal.

If you feel breathing is normal put the casualty into the recovery position
Send or go for help/call for an ambulance
Check for continued breathing

6 If breathing is not normal
Infrequent, wheezy and noisy gasps are not normal breathing signs.
Send someone for help or try to get help. If not start ‘Chest compressions’
Kneel by the side of the casualty Place the heel of one hand in the centre of the casualty’s chest Place the heel of your other hand on top of the first hand Interlock the fingers of your hands and ensure that pressure is not applied over the casualty’s ribs. Do not apply any pressure over the upper abdomen or the bottom end of the bony sternum (breastbone) Position yourself vertically above the casualty’s chest and, with your arms straight, press down on the sternum 4-5 cm After each compression, release all the pressure on the chest without losing contact between your hands and the sternum. Repeat at a little less than 2 compressions per second Compressing and releasing should take equal amounts of time

After 30 compressions tilt the head and lift the chin Pinch the soft part of the nose closed, and put that hand on the casualty’s forehead. Open their mouth with chin up Take a normal breath and place your lips around their mouth, making a seal. Blow steadily into the mouth and watch for the chest to rise, a second of normal breathing is an effective rescue breath. Keeping the head tilted and chin lifted, take your mouth away from the casualty and watch for the chest to fall Take another normal breath and repeat the above once again. After two effective rescue breaths return your hands without delay to the correct position on the sternum and give a further 30 chest compressions. Continue with chest compressions and rescue breaths in a ratio of 30:2. Stop to recheck the casualties only if they start breathing normally; otherwise do not stop.

If your first rescue breath did not make the chest rise as in normal breathing, then before your next attempt:
Check the casualty’s mouth and remove any obstruction

Recheck that there is adequate head tilt and chin lift

Do not attempt more than two breaths each time before returning to chest compressions

No one knows exactly where the “Cube” comes but it is thought to have Sufi Muslim origins in the areas of Greece, Turkey.

It is generally seen as a game rather than a test and can be ‘played’ as a Question and answer format.

Its purpose is to find out how you feel about yourself, those you love and your attitude to your present situation.

The questioner will have the ‘key’ to the answers and once known, the game cannot be repeated, unless you ask the questions of someone else…

The interpretations from the answers you give can vary, as well as the questions which are asked. Sometimes elements within the questions can be omitted.

To have a bit of an imagination is essential to the game as you will be asked to ‘picture’ in your mind: a cube (desert), a horse, flowers, a storm and a ladder.

You may surprised or disappointed by the interpretation of your picture but how much you believe, in what you are told, is entirely up to you!

So here it is:-

The Test
To start the game the questioner asks the other person to think of a desert scene. Then the person is asked to put a cube into the scene and describe it out loud. Then the questioner asks the player to describe a ladder and put it into the picture too. The game continues with placing a horse, some flowers and finally a storm within the picture imagined.

The interpretation (do not read this unless you have already done the test)
After listening to the descriptions the questioner becomes the storyteller, and can relate the “secrets of the cube”
1. The cube represents the player. The size of the cube within the scene is a statement about how they think of themselves.
A small cube shows that the player sees themselves as insignificant or humble.
A larger cube suggests just the opposite
A cube on the ground shows that the player is quite down to earth
A cube in the air or floating can mean the player is a bit of a dreamer.
2. The ladder represents friends or family
A ladder close to the cube shows that player keeps their friends close
If the ladder is as tall as the cube it means that the relationships with friends or family are. balanced
3. The horse represents the player’s lover.
The closer to the cube in the picture shows the importance of the players love life, and maybe their possessiveness
4. The storm represents the player’s current problems and their attitude towards them.
A large storm which covers over the picture can mean that the player is overwhelmed by their problems
A small or distant storm would give the impression that they have no big, insurmountable problems at the moment. They may even be a bit optimistic. The storm can be seen by some players as exciting or refreshing.
5. The flowers represent the player’s children or those to come.
The flowers can show creativity or taking care of things that are made
Flowers close to the cube could mean a close relationship with children
Broken or crushed flowers could mean a broken relationship with children or associates
The questioner/story teller might sometimes hold back on the interpretations in order to create further meetings with the player.

The Pokémon personality test shows the player which type of personality they have and gives them a Pokémon with the same personality. I am Treecko which is a grass type Pokémon and that shows they are a little bit bold and hardy.

The test and the program itself is mainly for children and I think it’s quite a good test and some adults might enjoy it as well.

The test asks different questions every time but eventually I got the correct Pokémon.

Whenever I have done this test I have had a different Pokémon but they have all been the same type. So I think that the test works.

Pokemon has been around for a few years now. It is about creatures which battle each other with no real harm coming to them.

The programme on TV at the moment (2008) is about young adventurers battling and collecting different Pokémon, making friends and travelling to different places.
